The SOUNDIRON Aztec Death Whistle is a deeply recorded folk wind instrument sample library that captures the dark soul of the ancient Aztec death flute, a ceremonial clay resonator used during rituals of human sacrifice and warfare at the height of the Aztec empire in Central America, during the 14th and 15th centuries AD in modern-day Mexico.

The Instrument

This flute - technically grouped in the same family as bird and animal call flutes - is made of kiln-baked clay. It has two chambers that create air cavities that are resonated by blowing into the top of the skull. It produces a harsh, hoarse, atonal vocal sound much like a dying breath, but with a high-pitched, demonic essence that is sure to evoke terror on an almost instinctual level. It’s the sound of death incarnate.

Recording and Content

This instrument was extensively recorded in a dry studio as well as in near and far positions in a large open hall for a rich and luxurious ambience.
