Bamboo Percussion Instrument

The Bamblong is a Southeast Asian mallet and brush bamboo register percussion library, featuring mallet and brush articulations in both dry and wet environments. It offers a flexible and intuitive interface with wide dynamic range and round-robin, sustained tonal pads, and more.

Instrument Details

The Bamblong is a small bamboo idiophone similar to a marimba or angklung, meticulously handcrafted from cut and carved Southeast Asian bamboo sections. It consists of a row of tuned bamboo logs that serve as resonating chambers, each ranging from 11⁄2 - 21⁄4 inches in diameter and 8 - 14 inches in length, with sound holes cut into the top of each. The actual playing surface for each log is a thin bamboo plank suspended on pegs above each bamboo log. When played with mallets made from recycled bicycle tires, the instrument has a soft and mellow musical note, but very crisp and clear, with a quick decay.

Variety of Sounds

We first recorded the Bamblong in a dry, intimate setting to capture the full warmth and tonality of each note. This gives it a strong presence and total creative flexibility, and also allows our Bamblong to work extremely well with any reverb or spatialization effects you like. We sampled the instrument extensively, averaging 20 dynamic velocity layers per note and 10 round-robin variations per dynamic layer. We also recorded hits and rolls using nylon jazz brushes for a unique raspy effect. In addition to dry studio articulations, the Bamblong was also recorded in a large glass and stone recording hall for a bright, organic live sound. This "wet" version of the Bamblong is ideal for use in symphonic arrangements and blending with other concert percussion.

System Requirements

The full version of Native Instruments Kontakt version 6.2.2+ is required to use the .nki instrument presets included in this library. The free Kontakt "Player" and "Add Library" import process does not support this standard Kontakt open format library. Windows 7 or higher. Mac OSX 10.12 or higher. Dual Core CPU, 2 GB system RAM, SATA or SSD hard disk drive recommended for this library.
