  • Generates interaural time and amplitude differences (ITD and IAD) crossover for the left and right ears
  • Provides a sense of distance from the emulated "speakers"
  • Performs subtle EQ and comb filter changes
  • Does not correct spectral imbalances in the headphone frequency response
  • Does not apply any type of "room correction" or room ambience
  • Controls "Dynamic De-Compression", decompressing the sound and aiding in the emulation of real speakers
  • Includes 3 "Quick Select" presets: "Near Field", "Mid Field" and "Far Field"
  • Allows you to modify the emulated distance with the Distance control

Cans2Conesv4 - Headphone to Speaker Emulator

What Cans2Cones Does

Cans2Cones is a headphone to speaker emulator that helps you mix on headphones in your home studio, dorm room, or while traveling. If you've ever struggled to judge how your mix will sound when played back on speakers, Cans2Cones can help! This emulator reduces the "super stereo" effect of headphones by generating cross-over interaural time and amplitude differences (ITD and IAD) for the left and right ears. Crossfeed provides a sense of distance from the emulated "speakers", with subtle EQ and comb filter changes, similar to what occurs with real speakers in a real environment.

What Cans2Cones DOES NOT do

Cans2Cones is not a "headphone equalizer". It does not correct spectral imbalances in the frequency response of your headphone, nor does it apply any type of "room correction" or room ambience. It assumes a flat frequency response in a heavily treated environment, with monitors positioned in a standard equilateral triangle relative to the listening position. A unique feature of Cans2Cones is the "Dynamic De-Compression" control, which reduces the compressed, "in-your-head" sound caused by the close proximity of the headphone drivers to the eardrums. This decompressor "dries out" the sound to a certain degree, helping to emulate what you would hear with real speakers in a real-world environment.

Cans2Cones Features

Cans2Cones includes 3 "Quick Select" presets: "Near Field", "Mid Field" and "Far Field", which generate the apparent distance and frequency response of the speakers used in those positions. The emulated distance can also be modified with the Distance control. Additionally, there is a "Subwoofer" control that fills out the low-frequency response to provide a full frequency response from any of the "speakers". By selecting different distances, the perspective of the audio changes - just as when moving the monitors in a real-world environment.
