Digital Delivery Mastering
“Mastered for iTunes”
If you are mastering yours music for digital distribution and streaming services such as iTunes®, Pandora® and Spotify®, Lurssen Mastering Console can ensure your music is heard. Lurssen Mastering Console has a new Digital Delivery Mastering feature that gives you mastered audio files that comply with Apple's “Mastered for iTunes” specifications at sample rate, bit depth and peak levels, ensuring your audio plays flawlessly at any time. compressed formats such as AAC.
Digital distribution and streaming services have indeed become the recurrent standard for delivering music to consumers, and engineers have begun to take more care with the production of the final master to ensure that the audio quality, when compressed to AAC or other formats, is as close as possible to the original files. For this reason Apple has developed a set of best practices and tools that should be used to ensure compatibility that have been called “Mastered for iTunes®.”
Technically, files must meet high resolution sampling rate and bit depth requirements, but the most important aspect is the peak level. As the trend in contemporary digital music production is moving towards super high masters, distortion is created as a by-product of the extreme use of digital peak limiters pushing the level up. Even though the maximum peak file volume is not exceeding 0.0 dBFS, digital clips will still occur when the file is decompressed back to PCM format for playback. Apple's Mastered for iTunes criteria states that no clips above 0.0 dBFS can be present in the digital master for submission. When verified by Apple tools made specifically for this purpose, masters with digital clips may be rejected.
This is where Lurssen Mastering's new Digital Delivery Mastering option comes in. Console. It offers an additional layer of protection against peak clips that can be generated by the AAC compression and decompression process. This process can cause clips that may go unnoticed when mixing and mastering with common sample peak meters. This is possible through the peak limiter at the end of the mastering chain working in a specific way. This ensures that the compressed file is free from distortion when played by digital delivery services such as Apple's iTunes®, Spotify and Pandora.
The Digital Delivery Mastering Option is part of the HD Engine in-app purchase, and can be enabled independently of HD Engine in the settings menu. It is also included in the free upgrade for Mac/PC users.
