Saturator X Plug-in
Analog personality for your digital soul
Welcome to saturation and perfect analog coloring
p>Valve saturation. Tape saturation. Transformer staining. If you've worked on projects in the analog domain, you're familiar with these concepts. You know what they are, what they can do to a track or recording, and how they work their magic.
The Saturation effect, or the introduction of harmonic distortion , on an audio track or mix can add that special “flavor” and “warmth” that only magnetic tape, tubes, transformers or transistors can provide. The T-RackS Saturator X offers classic analog saturation and takes you on a journey back in time to the birth of “modern” recording before computers and opens up your recordings to the mysterious and warm world of analog saturation.
Comprehensive Heat and Growl
T-RackS Saturator X is a complete tool for adding analogue flavor to your recordings. From tape to transformer to transistor, it offers 10 options - 10 individual styles of saturation and distortion, from the gentle and subtle drive cue of a lightly saturated transistor to the velvety full-on chaos of saturated tubes on the stem… and everything in between. T-RackS Saturator X delivers.
Saturation Operator
T-RackS Saturator X is intuitive and extremely easy to use. It works as a plug-in on individual tracks in your mix or as part of the T-RackS chain. It works by adding harmonic distortion to digital processing, which by its typical nature does not change or alter the linearity of the frequency response and harmonic pattern of a signal. The distortion insert simulates the way analog circuits behave especially when pushed to the limit.
The controls on the T-RackS Saturator X are quite simple: Input Gain, Output drive (controls can be independent or inversely linked), Saturation mode selection, Brickwall limiter activation and Oversampling selection.
The Input Gain and Controls Output Level can operate as individual controls, allowing you to freely adjust how much saturation is applied and how high the effect appears in the mix. You can also “reverse-connect” the two and maintain the input gain to output volume ratio. This allows you to set the overall perceived volume, fix it, and then adjust the amount of saturation applied without changing the output volume.
10 Analog Modes p>
Each of the 10 saturation modes accurately displays the behavior of the component, circuit or medium of the analog hardware, selected for its peculiar character.
The palette of available tones varies from “coloring” ” of the transformers, which offers a smooth change in frequency response and just a special touch towards the top of the gain range, to more heated and pronounced distortions like in tubes or solid state circuits.
Modes include:
Tape 1
This mode reproduces the classic character and high frequency compression of an analog tape machine reaching saturation when taken above normal recording levels.
Tape 2
Similar to Tape 1 in terms of typical usage, this mode reproduces a response in Analog tape plus “Lo-Fi” with more pronounced distortion and high frequency roll-off.
Master +6dB
This is a smooth digitally recreated saturation curve that can be very useful when mastering finished tracks to add RMS volume and body to a weak sounding mix.
Master + 12dB p>
This is similar to Master +6dB but with a smoother more pronounced saturation curve to make the effect even more prominent.
Tube 1 - Push Pull
This mode produces classic tube saturation with odd harmonics added by symmetrical clipping Push/Pull electronics. This creates a full distortion that can make everything sound warmer if used lightly or with a touch more aggressive if raised.
Tube 2 - Class A
This mode produces tube saturation with more even harmonics added by the Class A asymmetrical design. When used gently on stems or finished mixes, it adds a beautiful aura to the audio being processed, making it definitely sound more analog.
Solid State 1 - Push Pull
Same as Tube mode, but with the more aggressive character of the solid state circuit. This mode is best suited when transients need to be preserved.
Solid State 2 - Class A
Same as Tube mode but with more aggressiveness of the solid state circuit. This mode adds the same kind of magical aura that Tube Class provides but with more defined transient response.
Transformer - Iron
Este mode reproduces the very subtle coloration of the iron core transformer harmonic touch which has fewer even harmonics. This mode adds a gentle and gentle saturation with a small amount of distortion.
Transformer - Steel
This mode reproduces the behavior of the transformer of steel core. The difference with iron is that it provides roughly the same amount of odd and even harmonics. This mode adds a very subtle saturation by introducing only a small amount of distortion.
Magic Eye Measurement
Saturator X also features a VU meter “Magic Eye” which quickly gives you a visual indication of the amount of saturation being applied to the incoming signal. This style of VU meter replicates vintage gauges to the valve and will instantly transport you back in time.
“Over” Never - Brickwall Limiter
Saturate at will without clipping. When turned on, the Brickwall Limiter ensures you'll never enter the lands of digital clipping - this is a distortion no one wants to hear. The Saturator X Brickwall Limiter has no user-adjustable controls, it's simply the doorman to ensure your tracks and mixes never get out of the way.
Oversampling
Saturator X also features an “Oversampling” effect that lets you choose the oversampling multiplier you'd like to add to your signal. Oversampling provides a higher definition “picture” of your audio by providing better rendering of the harmonic pattern and overall quality of processing.
Track or Master
p>Saturator X is at home on individual tracks where you can use it as a creative tool to add dimension, depth and a warm, organic analogue feel, or it can be pushed to the limits of saturation for artistic applications. Use it on the master fader where gain can be applied more judiciously to give it the character of an analog stage, be it tube, transistor, solid state or tape deck.
